Step 1: Prepare Cake Frosting

To make cake frosting, in a pot bring the water to a boil on high heat. In a large bowl add granulated sugar and eggs white. Place sugar and eggs white bowl over boiling water, stirring constantly until sugar dissolve. Once sugar  dissolved, remove sugar and eggs white mixture and beat until it is thick, glossy and white in color. Add confectioner's sugar and beat until stiff peaks form meringue. Then add unsalted butter, shortening and beat together well. Add vanilla extract and beat together. Melt semi-sweet baking chocolate for 5 minutes over boiling water on high heat. Remove melted semi-sweet baking chocolate from heat and add it in the butter cream mixture and mix together well until smooth. Transfer some amount of cake frosting in a pastry bag and reserve remaining cake frosting for assembling the cake.


Step 2: Prepare Coconut Pecan Filling

To make coconut pecan filling, in a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, evaporated milk, egg yolks, unsalted butter and salt. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly and when the mixture begins to boil and thicken. Remove mixture from heat and pour it into large bowl and keep it for 5 minutes to thicken. Add vanilla extract, sweetened coconut flakes, chopped pecans and mix together well.

Step 3: Prepare Cake Batter

To make cake batter, in a medium bowl add all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt then stir it and set aside. Then combine milk in the yogurt, mix together and set aside. Next in another medium bowl add cocoa powder, hot water, stir it, add melted semi-sweet baking chocolate, soft butter, vanilla extract stir it and set side. In a large bowl add eggs, egg yolks and beat together until foamy. Gradually add granulated sugar and beat together until very light in color. Add cocoa powder mixture to the whipped egg mixture and beat together until it is all uniform. Alternating add flour mixture and yogurt mixture and beat until the ingredients are mixed together.


Step 4: Bake The Cake

To bake the cake, preheat the oven to 350F. Grease little butter and dust little flour on the bottom and side of the all three cake pans. Divide cake batter equally among the three prepared cake pans. Place two cake pans in the oven and bake for 40 minutes. Remove cake pans from the oven. Then  place remaining cake pan in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove baked cakes from the oven and cool for 15 minutes. Use a knife and loosen cake from the side of the cake pans and transfer baked cake on the wire rack and cool completely.


Step 5: Assemble and Decorate German Chocolate Cake

To assemble and decorate german chocolate cake, place cake bun on the serving plate. Apply cake frosting around the cake edge. Gently add coconut pecan filling. Then place second cake bun and repeat same process with second bun and finally place third cake bun.

Cover whole cake with the cake frosting. Pour ganache down the side of the cake. Pipe cake frosting patterns around the top and  bottom edge of the cake. Pour coconut pecan filling on the top of the cake. Place whole pecans on the top of the German chocolate cake and decorate  serving plate with whole pecans. Your German Chocolate Cake is ready!!!

  • 1/2 cup Yogurt

  • 169g Unsalted Butter, extra for grease

  • 3/4 cup Semi-sweet  baking Chocolate, melted

  • 4 tsp Unsweetened Dutch process Cocoa Powder

  • 4 large Eggs + 2 Egg yolks, beaten

  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

  • Cake Frosting

  • 1 cup Ganache

  • Coconut Pecan filling
